What to actually say to a parent, sibling or other family member who pushes your buttons, one message at a time.
"Grey rock" means being as dull as a grey rock when someone is looking for a reaction. You keep your replies short, calm and flat. You don't explain, argue or share news. There is nothing for them to grab, so the fight has nowhere to go.
It is not the silent treatment. You still answer real questions, plainly. You just stop feeding the drama.
Grey rock is for words that hurt, not for danger. If you are not safe, read When not to use it first.
The guilt trip: "After everything I've done for you, you can't even call?" I hear you. I'm not going to argue about this.
Playing the victim: "I don't know why you're so cruel to me." I see it differently.
The fake apology: "I'm sorry you feel that way." I heard you.
The money ask: "I need $500 by Friday. You owe me." No, I can't. I'm not able to help with money. I hope you find another way.
The family event: "Everyone will be there. You have to come." Thanks for the invite. I won't be able to make it.
Fishing for news: "So who are you seeing now? Where are you working?" Things are fine. Nothing new.
The put-down "joke" in front of everyone. Okay. Or no words at all. You don't have to laugh. A flat face is a complete answer.
The ultimatum: "This is my last attempt." "Last attempt" can be pressure. It can also be a warning that they might hurt themselves. If you can't tell, ask first: Are you safe right now? If you think they might be in danger, call or text 988 (US), or call 911 in an emergency. If it is clearly pressure: I'm not ready to talk right now.
To be honest with you: as of October 2026 we have not found clinical studies behind the grey rock method. This page is not therapy or medical advice.
